Periodontal Disease
Periodontal disease attacks the gums and bone around the teeth. Plaque is a sticky film formed of food, bacteria, and saliva. If plaque is not removed it changes into calculus and begins to destroy the gum and bone - gums become red, swollen, and start to bleed. Many people do not know that they have periodontal disease because in the early phase it is painless.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?
- Bleeding gums - gums should never bleed
- Loose teeth - weakened periodontal fibers
- Spacing between teeth - caused by bone loss
- Persistent bad breath - bacteria in the mouth
- Pus around the teeth and gums - infection present
- Receding gums - loss of gum around a tooth
- Red and puffy gums - gums should never be red or swollen
- Tenderness
