Sealants

A dental sealant is plastic coating that is usually placed in the deep groove of back teeth. More than 75% of dental decay begins in these deep grooves which are difficult to clean and are very susceptible to decay. A sealant protects the tooth by sealing deep grooves, creating a smooth surface, making it easier to clean.

SEALANT CANDIDATES

  • Children/Teenagers
  • Adults - less common

HOW ARE SEALANT PLACED? - First, a tooth surface is thoroughly cleaned by your dentist or hygienist. Then a solution that is acidic is applied. This creates small microscopic areas and a fine rougher surface. Rough surface enables dental sealant to attach to the tooth. Once the dental sealant has hardened it becomes a hard plastic varnish coating, and you can chew on the tooth again.
